"Hill and Grill"

We will be wrapping up our summer time trial series with the Hill TT once again this year, but with a twist.  After the hill TT (8/27/13), we will be grilling up some burgers and dogs.  We will have drinks and chips as well and will be giving out more raffle prizes.  The "Hill" part of the night starts at 6pm and will ride back and move straight to the "Grill" part.

If a hill time trial is not sounding like your favorite way to spend a Tuesday evening, just remeber, it is a lot less uphill than the full TT course!  We do have one more full TT on Tues. 8/20/13 before the "Hill and Grill".  Hope to see you at both.

Summer Time Trial - 2013

It's time for our Summer Time Trial Series! Weekly in August starting tomorrow evening (Aug 6) at 6pm in Douglas, we will hold time trials on a great bike course. The long course starts and ends at the Douglas Trail parking lot and includes a climb up Genoa. On the last week of the month, the race will end at the top of Genoa for a short (but intense) effort.

For more info click here

New this year-- We are planning to have prizes and a cook-out! Each week, we will take down names of all racing, volunteering and cheering. At the end we will draw names (at random) for cool prizes. You don't need to be the fastest to win a prize; you just need to be lucky. After the last TT, we will have a cook-out with the club providing burgers, dogs and drinks. More about this later.

Special thanks to the following for providing prizes for this year's time trial.  Check them out to refuel after your hard effort on the TT course:

Press Coffee and Tea Lounge (315 South Broadway, Rochester)

Great Harvest Bread Company (706 North Broadway, Rochester)

Keep an eye on the Facebook page and/or the TriRochester website for updates in case of cancellation due to unfriendly weather.

2013 Summer Picnic

WHEN:  Sunday, June 23rd at 4:00 PM

WHERE:  Oxbow Park Picnic Area

WHAT TO BRING:  Yourself, family, friends, additional food/beverages, chairs, games

This year we will be holding the club picnic at Oxbow Park at 4pm on Sunday June 23. The club will provide burgers, hot dogs, buns, soft drinks and water. Please bring a dish to pass. You can also bring chairs and yard games. Oxbow Park does allow alcohol, so BYOB (no kegs, please). Family and friends are welcome. Come out and enjoy an afternoon with your fellow triathletes. A map guiding you to Oxbow can be found here. The picnic areas are before you get to the Oxbow Zoo entrance. The zoo is open until 4pm if you want to visit the zoo before the picnic.  The picnic is after the RochesterFest Triathlon, so if you are racing, there is plenty of time to get cleaned up and come to the park and chill out after the race.

Apple Duathlon, Med City Marathon & North Star Tri

The Apple Duathlon in Sartell, MN was one of the few races selected as a qualifier for the 2013 ITU Duathlon World Championships in Ottawa, Canada.  This annual tradition is in its 31st year and once again drew a competetive field to race the 5k, 33k, 5k Duathlon.  We had three members racing and all three qualified for the World Championship race.  Nice job!!

Report by Carolyn Franzone

Photo Credit: Mario Franzone Rochester athletes made a good showing at the Apple Duathlon in Sartell, MN on Saturday, May 25th.   There was a competitive field with duathletes from 32 states.  All four Rochester athletes qualified to compete at the Duathlon World Championships in Ottawa, Canada in August.  (Top 6 finishers in each age group qualify.)

The weather forecast looked wet and dismal on Friday evening, but the morning was dry and comfortably cool for racing.   The last leg of the bike portion was challenging due to a strong headwind on the long stretch by the Mississippi River.

Lynne Wodrich qualified in the most competitive age group for women riding her new (and first) tri bike.

Jim Hannon was the only one to bring a red granite apple trophy back to Rochester… the rest of us may have to run/ride for the apple again next year.

Tri-season Kickoff Weekend Recap

The third weekend in May saw the kickoff of the Minnesota Triathlon season with races in Blaine, MN and Albert Lea MN.  The weekend started out Friday evening with the 8th annual Stay out of the Sun Run in Rochester.  We had members at all three races.

Blaine Sprint Triathlon 2013

Reported by Michael Licatino

Despite some pretty awful weather conditions, the Blaine Sprint Tri 2013 was a well-organized, well-supported, fun first race of the season.  Athlete parking was directly adjacent to the transition area, so don’t expect a long haul with gear and bike in the morning.  Transition was arranged by swim wave and there was ample space.  Racers were split into approximately 13 waves, mainly by age group.  Each wave consisted of around 25 athletes.  Water temp was a hot topic before the start of this year’s race; actual temp race morning was around 59 degrees.  The swim start was a beach start and the swim course was well marked and contained only two right-hand turns.  There was an estimated 50-75 yard run on a paved surface from the swim finish to transition.  The bike course was a two lap affair.  With mostly straight roads in front of you and no hills, the course was fast.  Riders had to navigate one roundabout and five 90-degree right hand turns on each of the two laps of the bike course.  Second lap bike traffic mixed with first lap riders at the transition area, so watch for merging bikers at this point.  The run course was a winding 3.5 mile tour through neighborhood streets.  The course stuck primarily to either the paved trail or neighborhood sidewalks.  It was a bit difficult to keep track of where you were in relation to the lake and transition, but the finish comes up quick once you pass mile three.  Runners are dumped out of the neighborhood and back onto the trail for the final run to the finish.  While post-race festivities were cut short due to weather, spectators and vendors were still present at the finish.  Overall, Blaine was a fun experience and a race I see myself signing up for again next May.  If you’re looking for an easy-going race with a fast course, this one’s definitely for you.

Land Between the Lakes Triathlon (Albert Lea, MN)

With the chilly March-ish weather, only the brave showed up for the Land Between the Lakes Triathlon in Albert Lea on May 19.  Race day saw rain before and after the event, but mostly just cloudy during it.   Kristina Sinnott sent us this report:

The swim was COLD! You certainly need a wet suit. This year there were waves and choppy water, so very difficult to sight, swim, and breath. The bike course was a 14 mile loop gentle rolling hills, one big one out of transition then the rest are mixed throughout. There was a great tail wind coming out for the first 6-8 miles, but you had a feeling you were going to pay for it. The 4 mile run around the lakes is like a trail run on pavement, with a mile or so of road running where running on the embankment of the road which can throw your feet off a bit. This is a nice race to begin the season, a quick sprint, with a lot of weather dependent components so you never know what to expect.

Congratulations to Chap for taking out the overall race win and to Sonja on her first Tri!

Stay out of the Sun Run

Unlike last year's uncharacteristically hot and sunny SoS Run, the eighth edition of the event this year had us once again watching the radar through the day to see if it would stop raining before race time.  We were lucky and the rain stopped a couple hours before the 6:30pm start and the conditions were quite nice for a run.  The event features a 5k and 10k race and a 5k un-timed walk with proceeds supporting melanoma research.  The race draws quite a crowd with 600+ runners and walkers, including many TriRochester members.

Hammer Race - 4/13/13

Reported by Bill Nevala and Josh Grenell

Hammer Race was AWESOME! Zach and I were so excited on the way to the race this morning. The conditions were tough out there. We did every obstacle of the 5 mile mud fest. Low crawling through 6" of muck was especially fun. Running through 2 ft. of river water then up 200 ft. of Magnus (The Terrible), which really should be called "Hamburger Hill" in my opinion.

The race was great! Josh Grenell and his team of volunteers were awesome! The shirts are really cool. So are the awesome medals! I totally want to recommend that anyone wanting to challenge themselves to a really fun group activity, give the Hammer Race a try.

John Freemore was first across the line and Zach and Bill Nevala came intogether in 25th and 26th.  Nice job!

If you are looking to get into adventure racing, the next installment of the Hammer Race is October 5th, 2013 (Http://HammerRace.com).
